Keeping the Vision Alive

Soon the Labor Day weekend will be behind us, the humidity will drift away and take the shape of falling leaves and pep bands, and it will be time to embark on a new and exciting school year. Parents, students, and school staff will be refreshed, focused, and ambitious to take on the challenges the 2014-15 school year will have to offer and make it the best one yet.  Many might wonder, how do we sustain that energy we are experiencing for the school year now and make it last? What steps do we need to take to ensure we stay focused through the bitter cold mornings in January? Fortunately, I am honored and humbled to be part of a district and school that is deliberately and systematically putting things in place to ensure that our vision is kept alive. Now it is my job to follow suit and keep that vision cultivated for the students, teachers, and parents I get the privilege to interact with on a daily basis.

During our in-service this week I was able to sit in on the beginning of our Special Education Department meeting lead by Christine McMasters @clmcmasters, and I was inspired by the short video clip she was sharing with her staff from Jon Gordon @jongordon11 on making their vision visible. His idea of a one word personal vision really hit home with me, and it didn't take long for the word "Present" to immediately smack me across the face.


No, "Present" doesn't mean I am looking to receive or dish out presents on a regular basis this year, nor does it mean that I want to do a lot of presenting. However, for me, it is to "be present" and devote my entire self to what I am doing at any given time. As someone who admittedly likes to have things in order and a certain level of control in his life (sometimes to an obsessive state), this is something that will be difficult for me both at school and at home as the chaos and managerial tasks begin to set in. I owe it to my family and those I work with to give them my full attention when it matters, and that is why I chose "Present" as my one word for this year.

Luckily I don't need an extensive marketing budget to promote my vision for the school year to myself, so I went with Sharpie on red paper above my computer screens. On the far right are the five pillars that form our district strategic plan, in the middle are our building's administrative foci, and on the left is my one word vision. I know carrying out this plan will take much more than just making these things visible; however, I am hopeful and committed to ensuring that these constant reminders throughout my day and year will help keep my vision alive.

"I Do" - Life After the Big Day

Wedding and graduation season is upon us. With these events we often become fixated on the parties, food, gifts, and all of the lavish preparations that go into celebrating these momentous occasions in our lives.  Last weekend my wife was filling her duty as Matron of Honor in her best friend's wedding, and in-between my frequent trips to the punch bowl I began to reflect on the significance of the qualities we learn up to these big days and how they prepare us for the journey that comes after.

Before that big wedding day we acquire many qualities as we grow up on how to show compassion, love, patience, and support for someone other than ourselves. These become integral as life begins to happen soon after exchanging vows.  It doesn't take long before these "tests" begin to show up, and they usually take form in the shape of needing a new transmission in the car, balancing a mortgage and utilities, replacing a water heater, or preparing for babies. The qualities we have learned along the way and the compassion, support, and commitment a husband and wife have for one another becomes far more important than the topper that we choose for the cake or the table arrangement at the reception. Don't get me wrong, neatly wrapped toasters, party favors, and photographers are great; however, these things quickly fade and give way to team decisions on a journey through life.





Another journey that is happening across the country as we head toward Memorial Day Weekend includes high school graduates that are about to walk across the stage, flip their tassels, and embark on their post-secondary dreams.  In the meantime parents and family members are anxiously making preparations to throw a celebration for 14 or more years of hard work and learning that has taken place up to this point. Much like the newlywed couple, the graduating seniors will soon be embarking on many new challenges, and those that have made an impression on their lives can't help but wonder what kind of successes they will attain along the way. Just as couples build qualities before walking down the aisle, as educators and parents we have the important task of doing more than just throwing parties and getting that diploma in their hands. We must focus on setting our young people up for success after graduation where they can be life-long learners in an ever-changing global society. New graduates will have many challenges and opportunities before them, some beyond which we can even fathom,  as our world becomes more saturated with technology and collaboration on a daily basis. Let's be sure to give our students the 21st Century Skills they will need along with the ability to persevere with whatever might come their way. So let the rice and confetti fall as we head into a summer of new beginnings, as we can be assured the work we have done up to this point will lead to a lifetime of purpose and success.

A Tail of Assessment

This is Gus (Kunsman's Full of Gusto). He is our six-year-old Labrador Retriever who lives to find and retrieve birds, chow down food, pee on things, and take naps in the sunshine. I am certain if he could structure those in a hierarchy of need for you they would basically fall in that order. Gus came to us as an energetic, curious, and ambitious young puppy with a lot of potential. He has grown to be my number one hunting partner and an integral part of our expanding Kunsman family.

The other night I was throwing retrieving dummies for Gus in the rain, and he was in a groove and not wanting to stop. As rain droplets dripped off the brim of my hat I began reflecting on the evolution of our training process, how I assessed his skills along the way, and although we are still learning everyday, how lucky I am to have a companion like him in the end. Of course I was also looking for a way to tie all of this into how we assess our students in the classroom.

I am fortunate to have acquired the skills and have the time that allowed me to train Gus from a puppy. In that time he has become better at finding and retrieving birds than I am at shooting them. Okay, a lot better. In introducing new skills to Gus I was able to quickly measure what he knew, create a plan for getting to where we needed to be, and begin our training regimen. These training sessions were kept to 15 minute intervals that included timely and effective feedback. I was able to formatively assess where Gus was at with his training, make adjustments and reteach as necessary, and save the summative assessment (hunting field or competition) until I was sure he was at a point of mastery. Were there pitfalls? Sure. Times I wanted to give up and became frustrated? Absolutely. What kept me sane and focused along the way? My clarity came in collaborating with others who were going through the same thing and keeping focused on our vision and the standard of excellence and level of mastery that I knew was achievable. Throughout the process I also needed to make sure Gus remained motivated.


From the beginning Gus has been motivated by what he was born to do: accomplishing a task and serving a purpose in our "pack". Sure, he has received grades, scores, and awards for various things and also the occasional treat from my wife. We have even entered him in a few competitions that have doled out scores and awards on his ability to find and/or retrieve birds. However, although the trophies and ribbons look pretty cool hanging over his bed, they are never what motivated him. His satisfaction has always come from the mastery, autonomy, and purpose (Daniel Pink) he accomplishes when bringing something back to me in his mouth or accomplishing a worthwhile task.



Gus and I are not alone on this dog/owner journey. Over the years I have also had the opportunity and pleasure to train dogs for other people on a few occasions. During that time it never once occurred to me when they called to ask how their four-legged friend was doing to say that their dog is getting an "A", "B", or any other letter grade that would have been arbitrary to them. Instead, what they first were looking for was knowing that their dog was safe and cared for. The next thing they wanted was specific feedback on how he or she was doing in relation to the skills we were working on and the reason they brought their dog to me. Having a safe and caring environment and giving timely and effective feedback based on what they are supposed to be learning? I feel like I have heard this somewhere before...

Our students enter our classrooms much like Gus entered our lives six years ago: energetic, curious, and full of ambition. They have a ton of potential that is just waiting to be molded and guided. As educators we have the important responsibility of pre-assessing all of those qualities they come to us with and then providing a vision and plan for differentiated instruction. We know that our instruction must align with the standards set before us along with keeping in mind the goals that our students and their parents have for their bright, young futures. Our gauge and measure of our students' journey is through our effective use of quality formative and summative assessments and giving quality, effective feedback in a timely manner. There will be struggles and challenges along the way; this is where it is important to collaborate with others and stay focused on our vision. When we follow this plan, along with sound pedagogy, we should be able to feel confident that our students are leaving our classrooms and schools prepared for their next endeavor.

As I wrap up and Gus slowly stretches and moves from his place in the sun, I want to highlight that I am not trying to say that assessing the training of a dog is as complex and important as assessing the education of our students; however, I am drawing from illustrations and connections I have made in my own personal and professional life. We owe it to our students with tails, and those without, to turn their natural ability into a mastery of skills that will equip them for a lifetime of purpose.

Easter Eggs - Motivating and Differentiating for all Ages




Ripped tights, splinters, and skinned knees - all part of the battle on a sunny Easter afternoon. This comical and competitive annual tradition quickly precedes the ever-popular Easter dinner at Grandma Peterson's house. Year after year my aunt goes above and beyond hiding plastic eggs (118 of them this year) around the yard for "the kids" in our family to find. The family egg hunt has evolved over the years as my cousins and I were youngsters hoping to find chocolate and quarters, to high schoolers in search of gas money, and then poor college students giving each other grass stains in hopes of finding the egg with the $20 bill in it. This year I embarked on a new egg hunting journey - stabilizing our rookie finder in her purple floral dress on her first endeavor.

Like the students in our classrooms those who participate in the egg hunt are motivated (or unmotivated) for a variety of reasons and come to us with a range of ability levels and prerequisite skills. In our family we have sprinters, walkers, and crawlers. The objective remains the same for all egg hunters and students - finding the egg or meeting the desired standard; this might take longer for some than others. Along the way we must be cognizant that time is the variable and meeting our goal is the constant. As organizers of the hunt and educators leading students on a journey of learning, we need to differentiate and individualize to ensure that everyone comes away with a successful and rewarding experience. This involves enriching for our high-achieving sprinters and providing intensive interventions and supports for those who are still mastering the art of walking.

Although everyone took a different journey with a variety of supports and challenges, everyone in this year's egg hunt came away obtaining their goal. For my daughter, success was made when she was able to find one purple egg in the grass and hear the coins rattle inside. The high schoolers and college students were sprinting for eggs with the big winner finding enough for nine gallons of gas. My 27-year-old brother still needs to be challenged (tackled) once in awhile.  I am fortunate to be part of a magnificent school where our teachers motivate and support all of our learners and a family who provides lasting memories for "kids" of all ages, even when there might be some grass stains along the way.

Must Begin Somewhere



Just begin - that keeps running through my head as I toss around the idea of beginning a blog. I find myself struggling internally and wondering of what prolific or insightful things I might say that will possibly inspire or encourage others the way I get inspired and encouraged by those I follow. I have decided to remove that pressure and look to this as my own reflection and journey through my role as an assistant principal in an amazing middle school and school district.  I hope to scroll down to this original post in a couple years and feel proud for the amount of growing I have done because of the great people that I am surrounded by. I am committed to serving those I interact with on a daily basis and sharing those great experiences here. Thank you for beginning on this journey with me.
